How to stay as a blog and not transform into a website?

Recently, we asked one of our friends who is a renowned graphic designer to review our blog and let us know what he feels about it. Being a senior industry expert his prospective to our blog was important to us. He complimented us "Nice Website Guys..". We corrected him "It’s a blog.." to which he replied "No ! it’s not a blog, it’s a website". The conversation ended with a handful of compliments and a to-do list but what couldn’t leave our mind was how the conversation got started.

In our pursuit of creating a good blog it seemed like we got lost somewhere. We have seen so many amazing websites that we know our blog or so to say our website was just an average piece of work. Of course a blog is a type of a website, we know that but we wanted a blog for ourselves and what we have ended up is something that isn’t one. So what do we do now?

We learned from our experience and made some conclusions. Our 1st obvious conclusion 'A website begins where a blog ends'. Our 2nd conclusion 'If you follow the SEO principals wisely you will end up with a website'. Our 3rd conclusion 'Overdoing things will make your blog look as matured as a website'. Our 4th and last conclusion 'If we don’t highlighting the term BLOG, it will be considered to be a website'.

Our next step was to start working on the elements which will make us look like a blog. We made the following improvements:

We added Blog Navigation Bar. Wordpress, Blogger etc have an option to display nav bars at the top.
We added Blog Roll and Blog Resources in the side bar.
We highlighted a number of logos on our blog. Some of these logos are of the blogs we are featured on. The others are the blogs we are member of. Some of the logos contain the word 'Blog' which helps us show who we are.
We highlighted the term 'Blog' in the following ways (1) We added the word ‘Blog’ where ever possible in the titles, headings and subheadings. Example: Blog Search, Blog Topics etc. (2) We stopped referring our blog by its name and started using the term ‘Our blog’ to refer to it. Now our articles use this term quite often. (3) We started using blog terminologies in our articles. There are a number of articles already written that can help you with blog terminologies. Click here for a reliable reference.

Keep in mind'A website begins where a blog ends'. So don’t overdo things that make your blog look as matured as a website. Unfortunately our SEO initiatives have made us change few things that we can’t do much about. But other than that the above improvements will surely make your blog look like one.
